Five out of the 68 officials listed for next month’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) are women referees.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) this week released a list of referees for 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.
The four women officials include a referee, an assistant, and three Video Assistant Referees (VAR).
Only Karboubi Boubchra from Morocco is the lone women’s referee for the tournament.
Zambia’s Diana Chicotesha will serve as an assistant referee.
For VAR, Rivet Maria Pakuita Cinquela (Mauritius), Mukansanga Salima Rhadia (Rwanda), and Akhona Zennith Makalima (South Africa) will oversee the referee monitors from the VAR room.
The remaining 63 officials are men, a testament to the growth of women’s football refereeing in men’s games.
AFCON 2023 will get underway on January 13 and runs through February 11, 2024.
It is the 34th edition of the competition to be hosted in five cities; Abidjan, Yamussoukro, Bouake, Khorogo, and San Pedro.
