For the first time in the history of the CAF Awards, two players from Nigeria won the top prizes.
As Victor Osimhen needed Nigeria’s 24-year wait to win the men’s Player of the Year, Asisat Oshoala won a record-extending sixth women’s Player of the Year prize.
This will be the first time that Nigeria will be winning the two top individual prizes in African football.
In recent times, the women have been winning the prize without the men’s folks with Perpetua Nkwocha and Oshoala reigning supreme.
The likes of Austin Jay Jay Okocha, John Obi Mikel, and Vincent Enyeama have come close to winning the men’s prize.
Nigeria not only smiled home with the top two individual prizes.
The West African giants won the women’s national team of the year after their unbeaten run in open play at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup which ended in the Round of 16 with a penalty loss to European champions, England.
Goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie also won the first-ever women’s goalkeeper of the year award.
With the outcome of the awards, football in Nigeria for men and women is on the rise.
